Project to Feed the Hungry

Boruch Volovik

Chabad is a worldwide outreach and educational movement, with institutions in more than 1,000 cities that provides activities and programs through Jewish community centers, synagogues, schools and camps. One of their many community centers is located in Flushing, New York. Chabad of Flushing was founded in 1997 and since then, has grown to minister to the needs of Jews throughout the city in many diverse ways, including hospital and prison visits, marriage preparation, and the Food-In-Need Program, which distributes food to needy families during the holiday period. Yoram Eliyahu is a major sponsor of the Food-In-Need Project at this center, which distributes food to over 300 families.

Yoram Eliyahu is active in Chabad of Kings Point, near his home and has been actively involved with Chabad of Flushing for more than ten years. He became involved in Flushing when he became aware of the many Jewish families in New York who are unable to provide the basic food necessities for their families throughout the year.

His concern for the hungry led him to sponsor the Food-In-Need Project at Chabad, which contributes food to over 300 families during the Jewish holidays. Thanks to this program, these Jewish families can have the necessary food items in order to help them enjoy a warm and satisfying holiday meal. Through this program, each year the holiday essentials, like chicken and other meats, bread, vegetables, fruits and more reach needy families throughout New York.

Not satisfied with just being a sponsor, Yoram and his family also participate in the door to door process every year of delivering the food to the families. "I involve my children in these deliveries," Yoram says " to teach them the importance of contributing to the welfare of others and performing good deeds."
